Experience the Craftsmanship of Stones of Zimbabwe

The sculpture village of Tengenenge, located in northern Zimbabwe, has been renowned for its high quality art, internationally since the 1980s1.

The village is located against the Great Digue, a geological which provides the local serpentine and spring stone used by artists.

The village was founded in 1966 by Tom, a former tobacco producer and chrome minerWhen international sanctions targeted both tobacco and chrome, Blomefield founded the Tengenenge Art Community so that he and his farm workers could make a living. The name “Tengenenge” means “the beginning of the beginning” in the local Shona languageThe artists, many of whom have exhibited overseas, shape sculptures that are meaningful to their Shona culture from the raw stone. The community has around 120 sculptors, many from families spanning over three generations
